MERIVALE MALL Changes Ahead

VICTORIA TAIT EDITOR

Over the past few years we have seen many changes to the Merivale area, both positive and negative. As a Merivale resident, I have been excited to see a new influx of high-end retailers come into the area and at the same time disappointed to see that Merivale Mall is looking so tired. Since the departure of Quinns Fashions, there appears to be more and more vacant spaces. I am pleased to confirm there are many changes in store for the mall. Our report on page 4 looks at the plans in place and what we can expect to see in the coming months. Along with this report, we also bring you the best of Merivale. We’ve hunt down some must-have winter food finds, including Traiteur’s delicious soups. A look around the shops has helped us put together a stunning interiors feature focused on styling your kitchen and laundry. How technology savvy are you? Get up to date with our home tech feature on page 8. With many of us looking to escape the winter months, our top family travel tips should get you to your destinations with your sanity intact. Enjoy this issue of Merivale. Editor: Victoria Tait victoria.tait@starmedia.kiwi

A new beginning is in sight.

Now we’re about to open a bright new chapter as we reach the final stages of building our brand new Merivale clinic on the corner of Papanui Road and Heaton Street. It could be the ideal start of a bright new life for you as well one with the freedom and convenience of no longer relying on wearing glasses or contact lenses.

With the cooler weather setting in, we’re on the hunt for comfort food. Our first stop is Traiteur, for soup du jour. With options from foodie specials such as pear and kumara to traditional French onion, it’s a divine way to warm up your day. The soup changes daily so check their website for what’s on the menu. Le Panier is our one-stop-shop for hot baked bread (French style) and croissants. The brioche, made especially for the weekend, is a must. For the best cheese scones in town head to Chicoti’s Café and, for your next morning or afternoon tea event, you can’t beat their pre-ordered platters full of scrumptious treats.

Beauty salon Brazilian Secrets offers a natural approach to waxing at 112 Leinster Road. ‘Sugaring’ is a much gentler form of waxing that uses a mixture of lemon, sugar, chamomile, as well as a few other Brazilian secrets. Tried and tested, it’s a must try. Jouvence Beauty Institute is traditional beauty with an X-factor in Merivale. We are in love with their signature body treatments, especially the Hanakasumi – a Japanesestyle technique of exfoliation and massage for the entire body.

The much-needed upgrade of Merivale Mall – inside and out – is a refreshing step forward. Hoardings placed in front of three fashion stores in Merivale Mall have sparked curiosity about what’s happening behind the scenes and what will be revealed when they are taken down. As it turns out, this is the start of a two-stage upgrade project at the mall, which will take about 18 months in total to complete, and comes almost 20 years since the last refurbishment project in 1998. WORDS: CHRISTINE DE FELICE PHOTOGRAPHY: CHARLIE JACKSON

The first stage is the upgrade of Building B, mall manager Nicola Dolan says, an extensive job involving the upgrading of the mall’s power, lighting, security and communication services, which are sited behind these stores, and were nearing their end of life. The retailers affected – Cue/Veronika Maine and Witchery – are currently operating out of the former Home Store premises, and when they return to their original premises, they will look “amazing”, and will be representative of the mall’s new design ambience, Ms Dolan says. “The new Witchery store in particular – that will be the first Witchery store in Christchurch to have the new fit-out, and it will be quite a different look. That will be opening towards the end of October.” Ms Dolan says a lot of the mall’s architectural features, like the stone columns, are now outdated, and these are being replaced by strips separating the businesses, as can be seen between the newly established Esquires café and Silver Moon. Stage two of the upgrade will see the refurbishment of the bathrooms and amenities,

with work due to start on August 1. “The bathrooms will be of a very high standard with features like hands-free taps. This was an opportunity for us to provide the best possible amenities for the mall’s customers, who are both our retailers and shoppers.” The remaining aspects of the upgrade will be undertaken in 2018 and are likely to focus on the overall ambience of the mall created by new design features, as well as the flooring and entranceways. By the end of the project it is expected that a large number of the mall’s stores will have undergone complete refits. “For our customers, the experience of shopping at Merivale Mall is really important and we position ourselves so the experience is everything they would expect,” Ms Dolan says. “We are exited about what’s happening. We value our community and we appreciate the loyalty our customers have shown during the planning stages of the upgrade.” Improvements to the mall’s car park are likely to happen further down the track, Ms Dolan says. Incorporating a number of men’s and women’s fashion stores, Merivale Mall is widely regarded as a fashion destination anchoring the Merivale Village retail area, with several other high-end designer stores in close proximity to the mall. The now-closed Quinns store, which for decades was the flagship store for fashion in Merivale, remains empty, with no word as yet on who will take up the space.

A formidable force in a competitive industry K

nown as using extraordinary as the baseline and going up from there is what happens when you execute innovative architectural design on problematic sites for clients who expect perfection as the starting point. Working alongside internationally acknowledged architects, Clive Barrington Construction has built many of Canterbury’s most admired homes and it is this successful partnership that allows the company to add considerable value. “Quality doesn’t have to cost the earth,” says Barrington, “it’s about good people consistently doing good work. We don’t employ any other kind.” Dave Walker, Director and Operations Manager, has worked alongside Barrington for 26 years. At around the 17 year mark, after giving due consideration as to whether he was rushing into it, Barrington declared him to be “pretty good at this” and made him a shareholder.

Together they have made Clive Barrington Construction a formidable force in a competitive industry basing it on old school values like working to the task, not the clock, only having project managers who have done their time as foreman and employing their own carpenters rather than subbing out the work to retain control over quality. It is all this, together with making a significant investment in an apprenticeship programme, that are the hallmarks of Clive Barrington Construction.

You can’t say you believe in quality work if you’re not prepared to invest in its future.

“You can’t say you believe in quality work if you’re not prepared to invest in its future,” says Barrington who has taken the same approach to the environment, planting more than five thousand native trees. A familiar and frequent visitor to the podium at the prestigious House of the Year Awards for many years, the Barrington name is now represented on the judging panel. Fortunately it is still also building superlative homes.

The team at House of Travel Merivale

Surviving international travel with your little ones can scare even the most seasoned traveller. Fear not. With our top tips for child-friendly travel, you will survive.

WORDS: BETH YATES

Having owned and operated House of Travel Merivale for 28 years now, I find it’s not unusual for people to wonder if there is still a need for travel agents. What will surprise many is just how busy we are booking amazing holidays all over the world for our customers. The Internet is an amazing tool and we can’t quite comprehend how we ever booked travel without it. It saves us hours of time, information is instant and, as travel agents, we have access to a number of booking sites that are not available direct to the consumer. The benefit to our customers is that we save you money, we save you many hours, we give you peace of mind, and we are there for you 24 hours a day if anything goes wrong. You have our expertise at your fingertips. We understand how travel works, we are booking it all day every day and know the traps and pitfalls, and we know the tricks that can save you money and give you an easier journey. There are many airfares where there could be a free sidetrip available, or a minimal add on if the total journey is all booked together. But if you don’t know, you don’t know to look, and it’s easy to end up paying more than you needed to because you simply didn’t have the knowledge.

1. INVEST IN A TRUNKI. Trunkis are a lifesaver when you are in long queues, as not only can children sit on them and scoot around, there is also a strap that allows you to pull your child along, saving their tired little legs if your walk to the departure gate is a long one. 2. PLAN YOUR TRAVEL ACTIVITIES. It is well known that children have short attention spans, therefore you need to ensure you have a number of planned activities. Easy and inexpensive tools to pack include a favourite storybook, colouring pens and paper, cards, and a snack box with long-lasting foods such as raisins. Stickers are great for keeping children entertained for a while – just give them a plain book to decorate.

4. PRESENT YOUR CHILD WITH PRESENTS. Wrap up small toys that you can present to your child as a reward for being good every half hour or so. These don’t have to be expensive and can be as simple as snacks or stickers. It’s best if the present is something that can entertain them for a while! 5. TAKE A PILLOW. On a flight, small children can sit on a pillow so they can see out of the window, while older children can use a pillow to sleep on. A blanket is also good as its familiarity will comfort your child as well keep them cosy.

3. GET A PORTABLE DVD PLAYER OR TABLET. Without a doubt, the one thing all parents seem to agree on is investing in some sort of technology to keep your children occupied. Before you leave, download some games or apps (make sure to switch it to airplane mode if in flight).

We know what to look out for to ensure everything goes smoothly. We ensure your travel documents are in order – it is so easy to get caught out without enough validity left on your passport, with not having the correct visas, or incorrect names on tickets. There are so many pitfalls, but we’re here to help you avoid those! We know our clients can research and find so much information online, and we just love it when they share their findings with us. We can collaborate and work with you; together we can create the best holiday imaginable. Our expertise helps us work together to find the best solution at the best value. House of Travel Merivale has been in business for 28 years, we have over 150 years’ experience in our team. Our passion is for travel, our goal is to create unique experiences that enrich people’s lives through travel.

“I spent two days looking for the best lengths at the demolition yard, to best represent a match with the floor from the previous house.” – Mark Prosser

BY MARK PROSSER BUILDERS Having lost their home in the Canterbury earthquakes, the homeowners were looking for an elegant design that reflected a fresh start, yet retained a sense of heritage. The importance of preserving the past saw recycled rimu from their former home reused. “I spent two days looking for the best lengths at the demolition yard, to best represent a match with the floor from the previous house. It was painstakingly slow, but rewarding to see our clients happy with the result,” says Mark Prosser. A stunning macrocarpa custom-made kitchen includes stainlesssteel benches and an island that boasts a solid American walnut benchtop. This warm heart of the home is clearly designed to make food preparation a pleasure. The attention to detail extends to the exterior. Cedar beval-back weatherboards make a strong impression, while the high upstands of tray roofing add depth and shading. The build took nine months, from start to finish. Nestled on a large piece of land, at the top of Richmond Hill, the three-bedroom, two-bathroom property has been positioned in such a way to be completely protected from the high winds, yet still enjoys glorious, elevated sea views. “It was a tough project as it was built only two years after the February earthquake and the loss of the previous house was still very raw with our clients. As time went on, they warmed to the idea of settling into their new home and we celebrated in style at the end of the project. It is a beautiful home that they still enjoy today.” www.markprosserbuilders.co.nz

Size: 254sqm Architect: Tennant Brown Special Features: Solid American walnut and stainless steel benchtops, Thermal Heart aluminium joinery windows.
